Chapter 16: A Thief in the Night
Bilbo’s personal transformation is mainly seen in his selflessness. He sacrifices not only his safety, but his fourteenth share of the treasure to try to save his friends, who will be ungrateful at best. Bilbo cares deeply for his friends and thinks little of himself , showing positive transformation. Even the proud Elvenking marvels at Bilbo’s honor. He is even honorable in something so small as keeping his word to Bombur and getting back in time to wake him up for his watch. Bilbo exemplifies the fact that the true measure of one’s character is how they honor others, especially those who can do nothing for them.
